Maria Callas: Think different [sic]

I will admit that, back in the day, I hated this spot—because the slogan is illiterate and because I was offended by the idea of Maria Callas’s image used to hawk consumer goods.

Time marches on, though, and even I have mellowed over the years! (LOL)

There is a “making of” clip about the Apple spot in which the advertising agency executive (at about 1:19) implies that the Callas footage comes from “Maria Callas’s home movies.” She says that the “home movies” came to her from Greece in a dusty tin.

Anyway, rest in peace, Mr. Jobs, and thank you for making computers that are both powerful and elegant. (I am of two minds about the iPod because of the rise in hearing loss among young people.)

Thanks for posting this. I had forgotten about these ads from so long ago. I remember driving to work in downtown Los Angeles where I would see the monstrous poster of La Divina on the side of a high rise every day not even knowing anything about her or even who she was. I’m proud to say that I know plenty of her now and am glad she was thought of by so many who didn’t even know opera.

PS – I also remember well the grammatical error in their slogan. So many kids probably picked that up along the way. Ha!

Thanks for reading and for your comment!

Is it possible that “different” is being used as a substantive? For example: “It’s cold outside! Think hot chocolate” or “Think warm.” I’ve been wondering about this lately and fear that, once again, I have been a pretentious and ignorant prig.

Or maybe “Think different” really is wrong! LOL
