Maria Callas and Rufus Wainwright

Prima Donna by Rufus Wainwright.

Rufus Wainwright’s first opera, inspired in part by Maria Callas.

This weekend, inshallah, I shall at long last see and hear Prima Donna, the first opera by Rufus Wainwright.

In the blog archives you will find posts about Maestro Wainwright and Callas, including a look at the opera’s possibly mistaken premises and Callas in another Wainwright song. (I also posted his “Damned ladies.”)

Along with Paolo Conte, Gianmaria Testa, and Leonard Cohen, Sancta Rufola is my favorite singer-songwriter.

I have interviewed him, and I also wrote (briefly) about him in an article about the Young People’s Chorus of New York City.

A bouquet of much-loved songs:

Bon week-end to all, and as Lady Gaga says, Bless G-d and bless the gays!

P.S. Yes, “Anthem” kind of makes everything else sound like tripe. Perhaps it was a perfidious selection on my part.
